My concern for philosophy is rather selfishly based around a desire to know what I should be doing, and that seems to me like a philosophical question. In service of that, I care about what it is that philosophy discloses to us about the world and how to live in it.
Still, I am just as concerned about whether philosophy may characteristically leave out certain things. So, I am interested as well in figures from the history of the subject who confront its limitations. I spend much of my time reading Nietzsche, who — I think — shares both preoccupations.
Education
I am currently a doctoral candidate in philosophy at the University of California, Riverside. Before that, I read the BPhil at the University of Oxford. I did my undergraduate work at Stanford University, where I completed a B.A. in Philosophy and Religious Studies with an honors thesis on Aristotelian magnanimity, as well as a co-terminal M.A. in Philosophy which has turned out to be largely superfluous.
Biography
I grew up in Louisville, Kentucky. Though my family is transplanted from Texas, I am very fond of the Commonwealth. Being a Kentucky Colonel is both one of my proudest and least meritorious achievements.
I attended DuPont Manual High School before moving to Bowling Green to attend the Gatton Academy of Mathematics and Science. There, contrary to the purpose of the institution, I attempted to study philosophy. I was also president of the ping-pong club.
Hobbies
I enjoy barbecue, games of skill and chance, amateurish powerlifting, weird fiction, the music of Waylon Jennings, and cats.
